Let me please introduce a brief history of the Proposer, Hiroshi Terata, by myself.
(1)Business Career
1) Ship building
He worked with Iino Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. for about three years (1960〜1963).
He was engaged in technical development and hull part design of large size new ships including mammoth tankers, combination vessels, cargo ships, LNG tankers, warships etc.
2) Hydraulic steel structures
He worked with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and its subsidiary companies for about 34 years (1963〜1997).
He was engaged in technical development, design, quality assurance, installation of hydraulic steel structures such as hydraulic gates, intake and discharge equipments, silt/sand dischargers, pipelines, water pipe bridges etc. which are provided harbour entrances, docks
and locks along waterways, or dams, weirs, floodgates and power stations on rivers, or waterworks and irrigation systems.
3) General construction consultant
He worked with Yachiyo Engineering Co., Ltd. for about 13 years (1997〜2010).
He was engaged in technical development and consulting business of hydraulic steel structures such as hydraulic gates, intake and discharge equipments, silt/sand dischargers, pipelines etc. which are provided harbour entrances, docks
and locks along waterways, or dams, weirs, floodgates and power stations on rivers.
(2)Academic Career
1) Bachelor's Degree
He earned his degree at Yokohama National University in March, 1960. His major was the Naval Architecture of Engineeing Department.
The thesis is ocean wave experiments and the graduation design is a cargo tramper of 13000 D.W. tons.
2) M.S. Degree
He was conferred upon the Degree of Master of Science in Engineering by the University of California Berkeley in September, 1969. His major was structural engineering of the civil engineering deprartment.
His thesis is numerical analyses of ocean structures with the five degrees of freedom finite element method which is suitable for an analysis of thin plate structures.
The analyses were followed by their experimental verification.
His status in Berkeley was Fulbright Exchange Visitor of the States and Financially Supported Student of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.
3) Doctor of Engineering
His thesis for a doctorate was submitted to Graduate School of the University of Toyo and passed their investigation and examination.
The Degree of Doctor of Engineering was conferred upon him in March, 1997.
The name of thesis is Studies on Hydraulic Gates -Relating to Increase in Their Sizes and Operating Head-,
which is an aggregation of the technologies he had developed during his engineering life in the Mitsubishi, corresponding to the age's requests for increase in hydraulic gate's sizes and operating head.
